How can I pay for my order?                                        

Checking out will take you to Paypal where you can pay either using your Paypal account, or you can just use a credit card, there is no need to have an account with Paypal.

If you live in the UK there are other options. We can accept Sterling cheques drawn on a UK bank or UK Postal Orders (payable to 'Nigel Smith'; payment  by EFT direct to our bank account (contact us for details);or post us (at your own risk) cash in GBP. Our postal address is on the Contact Us page.

From outside the UK we can also accept payments (in GBP) direct to our bank account, or you can post cash to us (at your own risk) in GBP, EUR, or USD only.


How much will it cost to send my order?

That depends where you live. Paying through the checkout will incur standard shipping charges per item, if you think your order isn't likely to weigh much (for example, if you're buying a map) it would be a good idea to contact us and we can calculate shipping at cost and send a Paypal invoice.

Fixed-at-checkout shipping rates are given below. The assumption is that your book, when packed, will weigh between 500 and 750g. All prices are in GBP, the first figure is for first item in order, the second figure in brackets is for each subsequent item (if any).

UK First Class Royal Mail: 3.50 (2.15)

UK Second Class: 2.85 (2.05)

Europe International Standard (i.e. Airmail): 6.25 (3.50)

Rest of World Zone 1 International Standard: 11.75 (6.00)

Rest of World Zone 2* International Standard: 12.50 (6.75)

Rest of World International Economy (i.e. surface/ground): 9.25 (4.50)

*RoW Zone 2 includes Australia, New Zealand, and other somewhat less accessible territories such as Pitcairn Island and Norwegian Antarctic Territory)


How will my order be sent?

In most cases we send our packages using Royal Mail. They are still reliable. It is very uncommon for Royal Mail to lose one of our packages, although they have very occasionally taken one on a circuitous route. It is possible, however, within the UK, that if your order is particularly heavy we may use an alternative service.


How long will it take my order to arrive?

Orders will usually be dispatched the same or next working day. Royal Mail delivery aims are as follows:

First Class - the next working day (includes Saturday, at the moment RM still deliver on Saturdays)

Second Class - 2 to 3 working days

Europe - 3 to 5 working days

International Standard outside Europe - 5 to 7 working days

International Economy:

North America - up to 6 weeks

South America, Africa and Asia - up to 8 weeks

Australasia - up to 12 weeks

Pitcairn Island and Norwegian Antarctic Territory - I imagine you know it takes a long time for stuff to get to you.


Can my order be tracked?

Within the UK, yes; elsewhere, possibly, but you will need to contact us to check and for a quote on cost. Tracked services are only available to certain countries. It will also cost a lot more.  Examples:


A package weighing just under 250g will cost between GBP1.24 and GBP3.20 to send first class within the UK; with a signature on delivery it will cost between GBP2.34 and GBP4.30; guaranteed next day delivery will cost between GBP7.15 and GBP10.15, or more (up to GBP26.22).

To send it within Europe, International Standard will cost GBP3.70; tracked and/or signed will be GBP8.70.

International Standard to Zone 1: GBP4.75; tracked and/or signed GBP9.75.

It's a bit complicated, packages can be sent to most countries signed for, to some tracked, and to a few both tracked and signed.

What if my order doesn't arrive?

In the UK: see above - it is almost unprecedented for Royal Mail to completely lose a parcel. Sometimes the postie tries to deliver it and forget to put a card through the door saying he couldn't. If your order hasn't arrived within a fortnight of dispatch, please contact your local sorting office as the parcel may be being held there for you. If they deny any knowledge of it get in touch with us and we will try and resolve the problem for you. On one occasion we found that a parcel had been returned as undeliverable but had somehow ended up on a shelf in an obscure corner of the sorting office at our end.

Not UK: Customs can hold things up quite considerable, especially if they decide to hold on to a whole shipping container of mail. We've (rarely) had parcels returned from other European countries (France, mainly) as undeliverable some six months after we sent them. If possible try and find out whether your mail service has put your parcel on a shelf in an obscure corner somewhere. But if you're worried do get in touch with us.

Email's best, I'm often not able to answer the phone immediately (although you can leave a voicemail this does stretch things out a bit), and letters by post are slow. With email there's a record of what we've said to each other, and it's quick. Please give as much detail as possible: if the query relates to a specific item in stock, please try and give the Seller ID number as this precludes any confusion and obviates any delay in responding. Don't forget to say what country you live in if the query is about shipping costs.
